Help with research proposals

If you are preparing an application to a peer-reviewed funding competition for applied health or social care research and need help with your proposal, Research Design Service (RDS) London can help.

RDS London is part of the National Institute for Health Research. It brings together the internationally recognised expertise in applied research methods in health and social care from four institutions within London (King’s College London, Imperial College London, Queen Mary University of London and University College London).

Since opening for business, RDS London has provided invaluable advice and support to researchers and clinicians who are preparing research proposals for submission to peer-reviewed funding competitions.

How can RDS London help me?

With a wealth of knowledge at its fingertips, RDS London can provide specialist advice on the following parts of your research proposal:

  • Formulating research questions
  • Building an appropriate research team
  • Involving patients and the public
  • Designing a study
  • Appropriate methodologies
  • Regulatory and ethical issues
  • Advice on writing lay summaries
  • Identifying the resources required for a successful project

When should I contact RDS London?

Although RDS London can help at any stage of the preparation, you are advised to contact the service as early as possible to maximise your chances of success.  6-8 weeks before the submission deadline will normally give the advisors enough time to provide you with their full support.  4 weeks before the deadline is normally the least amount of time they will need to help you.

The Service is designed to help researchers at all stages of preparing proposals, including:

  • Ensuring that the research topic is within the scope of the funding programme
  • Providing advice on the quality, practicality and feasibility of research questions and methods
  • Advising of the common pitfalls encountered in funding applications
  • Identifying enhancements to the proposal to improve chances of success
  • Dealing with feedback and failure from previous funding competitions

What does the service cost?

The service is completely free of charge and is available through use of online resources and consultations.
